Eco Friendly DIY Chair Reupholstery

We wanted to dedicate a post to ordinary people creating extraordinary pieces from furniture most people would throw away. These people have an eye for seeing the potential in an old piece of furniture and the vision to make it into a beautiful work of art. Kudos to each and every person who is a successful DIY'er!

In our world today it is important to find creative ways to reduce waste. The term upcycling is the process of converting waste materials or useless products into new materials or products of better quality or higher environmental value. So not only are you having fun, you are helping to reduce waste.

We found five projects we wanted to share with our community. We hope you find them helpful and inspiring.

First Steps to Eco Design for Your Interiors

We are doing the green thing are you?

We commonly have homeowners and interior designers seeking our services for their eco design projects. We delight in taking an old piece of furniture and giving it a new life, particularly with eco friendly materials. It’s really like finding buried treasure! When we remove the old fabric to discover a well-built, hand-crafted piece of furniture, so well made that it that rarely needs structural alignment, it brings it all home. Since the piece of furniture is being reused instead of thrown in a landfill or waiting at the curbside, it is truly an environmentally friendly piece. It is amazing how a piece of old furniture with a makeover can add so much character to your space.

Custom Furniture to Fit and Transform Any Space in Any Home

Is it impossible to find a specific furniture to fit a specific space? Why not build an original, custom piece to blend flawlessly into the space? You can design the interiors to meet the specific space allocated by designing custom pieces to fit. Custom, made-to-order furniture is the only way to get exactly what you want and need. Custom cornice boards, personalized sofas, custom chairs, custom banquettes, original ottomans are a few pieces you may be looking for.

DSC - Custom Kitchen Chairs

I love my job. I am always taken back by the stories behind special, sentimental family heirlooms. For example, a customer, stopped by this morning to take a peak at an antique, empire/sleeper sofa we are reupholstering for her mother who has Alzheimer's. Anne's mother is moving from her home of 54 years, to a condo for better proximity to Anne, her caretaker. As we were discussing changes she wanted for the sofa, she shared with me the sweetest story:

Why Buy Lasting, Custom Furniture?

How to choose furniture for your home is a common frustration and confusion for most homeowners. Should you go to your local Rooms To Go store around the corner? Or should you spend some time researching local custom furniture manufacturers? Then you start to wonder, what about handcrafted custom furniture built to fit perfectly into your space? Oh, they are probably too expensive, right? Here we will go through the different types of furniture available to you as the homeowner. Education is your best tool when purchasing furniture!

IKEA Ugly Sofa Contest

Wow! Look what I found:

It’s an ugly sofa contest through IKEA. What struck me as ironic is this: Ikea makes some awesome looking furniture, but what lies underneath is ugly! The ugly sofa contest will consist of some nasty looking sofas, no doubt, but I assure you many will be great sofas... perfectly built with sound materials. You should not dismiss your old sofa or judge it simply on how it looks!

Needless to say, people will miss the irony of this contest. I’ve seen what lies beneath the cool exterior of IKEA furnishings. Although Ikea has some awesome stuff, the upholstered pieces are sad and poorly built.

Henredon Sofa Uncovered

There was a day when the name Henredon evoked visions of style and integrity. If you owned a Henredon sofa, it was certain to be passed down to your children and even possibly their children. Henredon sofas were structurally second to none. This is no longer the case... at least with THIS particular Henredon sofa. First let me mention that this was NOT an inexpensive sofa! The owner of this sofa paid a high price for the name. We removed the fabric on this sofa for reupholstery. To our surprise this sofa was a mess! It was made with plywood and fitted together with staples. Large gaps remained where the back supports of the sofa met the side and only 4 screws were used to hold this sofa together!

From Cabinet Upholstery to Wall Upholstery

We have upholstered sofas, chairs, ottomans, pillows, headboards, cabinets, and walls.

This project was fun from the beginning.

Why Custom Built?

A great deal of new furniture is currently manufactured in China.  Many furniture manufacturers use inferior products in the fabrication process and, in fact, a new term has hit the furniture market as a result of such processes . . . ENGINEERED WOOD.  Engineered wood is nothing more than a fancy name for PRESSBOARD or PARTICLE BOARD.  In addition to “engineered wood”, these same manufacturers also use pine, cardboard and a spring / support system called “no-sag” springs. Although in certain circumstances, no sag springs are adequate, they should NEVER be used in the seating of sofas, chairs and pieces used on a regular basis.
